Writing Courses

Sharpening Your Business Communication Skills And Report Writing

Objectives: By the end of the course participants will be able to
  1. identify primary information and focus readers' attention on it,
  2. write convincingly and persuasively,
  3. create letters, memos, reports, and email that consistently achieve the intended impact, and
  4. use a writing style and tone appropriate to the intended audience and subject matter.
Content:

The emphasis to be placed on each topic will depend on pre-course consultation with staff and specific interests elicited from course participants at the start of the course. Proposed topics include techniques for

  • organizing the writing task,
  • identifying primary information and directing readers' attention to it,
  • arranging facts for maximum impact,
  • writing action-getting letters and memos,
  • writing effective email messages,
  • writing short informal business reports,
  • writing direct and concise messages, and
  • sharpening writing style to create a strong, effective presence.
Format:

About 50% of the course will comprise instruction on how to plan and write various types of documents, plus practical techniques for structuring letters, reports and email. The remainder of the time will be devoted to practical exercises during which you will be able to practice the business writing techniques learned during the course. There will be individual and group exercises, with discussion and feedback.

Study Materials: Textbook Get to the Point! Writing Effective Letters, Reports, Proposals and Email, (extra charge), or approximately 50 pages of handout notes.
Duration:

1 day or divided into half days (can be shortened to fit your schedule.)
