General Outline for
Three-Day Course

Techniques for Making Effective Oral Business Presentations

Objectives: By the end of the course participants will be able to
  1. identify an audience's primary interests, and then develop a topic to satisfy the audience's needs,
  2. establish a warm, positive, yet businesslike presence,
  3. trim their information to keep their presentation concise yet complete,
  4. develop confidence in speaking in an informal or formal setting, and
  5. moderate a multiple-speaker presentation.
Content:

The emphasis on each topic will depend on pre-course consultation with the client and specific concerns expressed by course participants at the start of the course. The topics will include

  • planning and preparing an oral presentation,
  • focusing a presentation to capture and hold audience attention,
  • differentiating between need-to-know and nice-to-know information,
  • creating speaking notes and visual aids,
  • devising an interesting opening,
  • presenting to inform vs. presenting to persuade,
  • presenting information at informal and formal venues,
  • developing an effective platform manner,
  • coping with nervousness,
  • using body language to create a positive impression,
  • introducing a speaker or acting as a moderator for a series of speakers,
  • participating in a group presentation, and
  • answering questions from the audience.
Format:

Instruction on how to plan and deliver a technical presentation (25%), with each participant making at least five oral presentations (75%). Individual presentations will range from 3 to 15 minutes, and will be followed by discussion and feedback.

Study Materials: 30-40 pages of notes, plus a videotape of personal presentations.
Duration:

3 days or divided into half days (can shorten to fit your schedule)
