Objectives: By the end of the course participants will be able to

  1. identify primary information and focus readers' attention on it,
  2. write convincingly and persuasively,
  3. create letters, memorandums, reports, email, and proposals that consistently achieve the intended impact, and
  4. present an effective report or project proposal at a meeting.
Content:

The emphasis to be placed on each topic will depend on pre-course consultation with staff and specific interests elicited from course participants at the start of the course. The proposed topics will include techniques for:

  • organizing the writing task
  • identifying primary information and directing readers' attention to it,
  • arranging facts for maximum impact.
  • writing action-getting letters and memorandums,
  • writing effective email messages,
  • writing short informal technical reports,
  • planning and writing longer informal and semiformal technical reports
  • planning and writing informal and semiformal proposals,
  • preparing and presenting a proposal at a meeting and
  • sharpening one's personal writing style to create a strong, effective presence.
Format:

Instruction on how to plan and write various types of documents, plus practical techniques for structuring letters, reports, email, and proposals (60%), interspersed with practical exercises (40%). There will be individual and group practice, with discussion and feedback.

Study Materials:

Textbook Get to the Point! Writing Effective Letters, Reports, Proposals and E-mail, (extra charge), or approximately 70 pages of handout notes.

Duration:

2 days or divided into half days
